COMPLETE - flagship project for the Baltic Sea Region

At the end of September this year the COMPLETE project (‘Completing management options in the Baltic Sea Region to reduce risk of invasive alien species introduction by shipping’), in which the University of Gdańsk is also one of the partners, has obtained the flagship status. Such a distinction is awarded under the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) only to projects of high importance and can demonstrates the high political relevance of ships’ ballast water and hull fouling management to reduce the risk of introduction of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens. To minimize the risk of introduction of such harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens addressing both major vectors for invasive species introductions: ballast water and biofouling, it is necessary to develop consistent and adaptive management options for the Baltic Sea Region. This is the main goal of the COMPLETE project, while one of its important and innovative results will be the development of a roadmap for a regionally harmonized biofouling management strategy by involving all relevant stakeholders in all phases of this process. The flagship status supports conveying the relevant results and recommendations of the COMPLETE project to the policy level and contributes to ensuring that the project results are used in practice.

COMPLETE partners from Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden are working together with 23 associated organizations from all Baltic Sea states. These organizations include research organizations, maritime and environmental ministries, their agencies, relevant private companies (e.g. shipping companies, shipowners, port authorities) and NGOs. Among them Poland is represented by the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation, the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. and Polish Register of Shipping S.A. The leading partner in the project is Kotka Maritime Research Association from Finland (coordinator: Dr Miina Karjalainen, e-mail: miina.karjalainen@merikotka.fi), while at the University of Gdańsk project is coordinated by dr. hab. Monika Normant-Saremba from the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography, prof. Associate. (e-mail: monika.normant@ug.edu.pl).
