Meeting two working groups of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea

In the first week of March 2020, Institute of Oceanography will host two working groups of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), i.e. the Working Group on Ballast and Other Ship Vectors (WGBOSV) and the Working Group on Introductions and Transfers of Marine Organisms (WGITMO).

Both groups are made up of experts who deal with non-native species in the marine environment in a very broad context - from the vectors of their introduction along with shipping and methods to prevent this phenomenon, through their rapid detection, secondary spread, distribution, population dynamics and effective monitoring to their impact on biodiversity and system services, as well as assessing risk and invasive potential.

The activities of WGBOSV and WGITMO provide scientific support in the development of international activities aimed at both reducing the risk associated with the introduction of non-native species to new regions by merchant ships, as well as in effective management to limit the negative effects of these species. In both groups, Poland is represented by employees of the Oceanography Institute, i.e. Monika Normant-Saremba, prof. UG and dr Joanna Hegele-Drywa from the Department of Experimental Ecology of Marine Organisms.

The meeting of both ICES groups is organized as part of the Interreg BSR COMPLETE project entitled: "Completing management options in the Baltic Sea Region to reduce risk of invasive alien species introduction by shipping", which aims to develop procedures consistent with the Baltic Sea region to reduce the risk of introducing invasive species by shipping activities ( www.batliccomplete.com).
